Description:

Mike Pinto begins his thirteenth season as Miners manager in 2019, and his fourth in a dual role of manager and Chief Operating Officer. He joined the team for the inaugural 2007 season and has led the Miners to a 663-486 record over twelve seasons, with the Miners’ .577 winning percentage standing as the best mark in the history of the Frontier League for teams that have lasted more than one season. Pinto is also the league’s all-time leader in wins by a manager, surpassing the previous record held by Frontier League Hall-of-Famer Fran Riordan with his 626th victory on June 2nd, 2018 against the Evansville Otters. He has guided the team to seven playoff appearances (2008, 2010-12, 2014-16) and four division titles (2010, 2014-16) along with the 2012 Frontier League Championship.

During 2010, the Miners set a new Frontier League benchmark when they put together a record 20-game winning streak. In 2012, after managing the Miners to their first ever Frontier League Championship, he was named the 2012 Minor League Manager of the Year by the Pitch and Hit Club of Chicago. From 2014-16, Pinto led the Miners to three straight division championships (the second time in league history that had been accomplished) and three straight 60-win seasons (which no team in league history had ever achieved).

In his twelve years in Southern Illinois entering the 2019 campaign, 52 Miners players have signed affiliated contracts. In addition, three former coaches have also had the opportunity to join a MLB organization, while two have moved on to manage other independent league teams. Three former Miners (Clay Zavada, Tanner Roark and Brandon Cunniff) have reached the major leagues.

Mike’s business career has taken him from his early years as a booking agent and manager with Beacon Artists and Paramount, guiding the careers of major music industry artists. He transitioned years later as the music industry shifted and became a successful real estate broker and then sales manager for DuVal Caruso Realtors who became part of the renown Baird and Warner Company. Mike went on to become National Sales Manager for Tom Hopkins International, the nation’s leader in sales training.

In 1990, Pinto began his career as a consultant and professional speaker. He has done more than 1,000 presentations as the keynote speaker at corporate conferences and conventions throughout North America, speaking to more than a half-million people. His presentations on Brand Strategy, Corporate Culture and Client Experiences have consistently received rave reviews. Companies like Merrill Lynch, Bank of America, Morgan Stanley, Ameriprise, Hyatt Hotels and many others have used Mike’s presentations regularly to inspire their employees and management teams.

Mike has also created comprehensive strategic brand initiatives for companies like John Hancock and NorthStar Financial as well as brand collateral for hundreds of financial professionals.

His focus on the business side of the Miners is to guide the organization to creating a “Disney-like” fan experience, extraordinary customer service and rewarding partnerships with area companies.

Things Discussed:

Mike Pinto, a professional speaker to fortune 500 companies on building your brand, a motivational speaker, Frontier League Independent Professional Baseballs all time winningest manager and a personal friend of the host of the show, Peter Caliendo, talks about building a winning program and culture. Mike has had over 59 players go on to Affiliate baseball and built a consistent winning program with 7 playoff appearances, 4 Divisional Titles and a Frontier League Championship. Things discussed: Branding yourself as a coach of a baseball program. Branding your program. Relentless Learner. An Outside the Box Thinker. Always searching for the next best thing to make his team better, get the extra edge. Being a professional on and off the field. Dealing with the aftermath of bad social listing, DON'T PRESS SEND. WHY? Social media is big on building your brand, building a successful program. Just be you. Character first and then talent. Fun means mixing it up even when you lose, 30 min cool off period and forget the loss, have some fun. Umpire team meetings, understand umpires, how hard calls are, etc. Team meetings at underground mines to deal with failure. Cooking parties, learn how to cook, teach a skill but build relationships with your teammates. Dealing with discipline. Hardest thing is cutting players, how is that done the best way? Ownership is critical in building a winning program. Treating opposing teams and umpires first class is part of it. How you treat the fans, staff members, all part of the team. How you deal with the Media is part of building a great program. What you look for in catchers. 24 hour rule. Attention to details. Keeping the clubhouse and dugout spotless is part of building a great culture. and so much more. Mike Pinto Twitter @MikePinto3 Website: www.southernillinoisminers.com
