Coach Caliendo sits down in Moscow, Russia during the ISG Baseball/Russian
Baseball Federation coaches conference with ISG Baseball Instructors,
Jeffrey Darrion Siler of John Carroll High School in Maryland and Pirates
Minor League Hitting coach Kory DeHaan.

They discuss what they covered in the weekend coaches conference with the
Russian coaches. Also, some new ways players are being trained in
uncomfortable & unstable ways so they learn to get comfortable. This is a
gold mine of information into how the Pirates are so successful with player
development and how High School programs implement similar development
styles.

Kory Dehaan Hitting Coach Pittsburgh Pirates

Born July 16, 1976 in Pella, IA…Resides in Bradenton, FL, with his wife
Rachel and three daughters; Kendy (17), Reese (15) and Delaney (14)…Is in
his eighth season as a coach or manager in the Pirates organization; his
second straight as the Hitting Coach with the GCL Pirates…Was a roving
instructor in 2017 after serving as the Manager at Bristol in 2016…Served
as Hitting Coach in 2014 and 2012 with Bradenton and spent the 2013 campaign
with Jamestown in the New York-Penn League…Served as Hitting Coach for the
Fort Wayne Tincaps (Padres’ Class A) in the Midwest League in 2011 after
working in the same capacity in 2010 for the Padres rookie level affiliate
in Peoria, AZ…Began his professional playing career as an outfielder in
the Pittsburgh organization after being selected by the Pirates in the
seventh round of the 1997 First-Year Player Draft…Was selected by San
Diego in the 1999 Rule 5 Draft…Made his Major League debut with the Padres
on 4/25/00 at Pittsburgh and doubled off Pittsburgh’s Brad Clontz for first
big league hit on 4/27/00…Connected off Darren Dreifort for first Major
League home run on 7/5/00 at Jack Murphy Stadium in San Diego…Produced a
.280 batting average, 35 home runs and 264 RBI in 632 minor league games
over his seven-year career (1997-2003)…Went 22-for-114 (.193) with two
homers and 13 RBI in 102 Major League games with the Padres in 2000 and
2002…Began coaching career in 2009 with the Chico (CA) Outlaws of the
independent Golden League; started that year as the Hitting Coach and was
promoted to the manager’s post at mid-season…Attended Morningside College
in Sioux City, IA…Received the Chuck Tanner Award in 2016, an award given
annually since 2011 by the Pirates Player Development department to the
minor league staff person who best exemplifies Tanner’s optimism, work ethic
and leadership.

“Jeffrey Darrion Siler II

A John Carroll alumnus, Siler returned to his alma mater in 2015 and has
quickly become an integral part of the school community and is currently the
Head Varsity Coach. In 2018 he was awarded the “John Steadman High School
Baseball Coach of the Year” as well as MSABC (Maryland State Association
Baseball Coaches’) Coach of the Year and selected to coach at the Brooks
Robinson All-star game at Camden Yards. Coach Siler has played and coached
baseball all over the world. He has coached extensively in Europe, serving
as a Portuguese National Team Assistant Coach and Academy Development Coach.
While in Europe he coached several club teams to European Cup Qualifiers and
International Tournaments in Belgium, France, Czech Republic, Spain, Germany
and Italy. He has also been a keynote speaker at 2015 coaches’ clinics for
ISG and MLB International in Portugal. He was selected to an EBCA program
where he interned at UCONN (University of Connecticut) Baseball in 2013.
Siler served as Director of Operations at Extra Innings Baltimore, has
worked with multiple club baseball programs in the US and continues to work
extensively with Caliendo Sports International where he works to develop
talent and coaches throughout the globe. He has recently traveled to Cuba,
Dominican Republic, Japan, and Italy helping coaches and players around the
world using the insights he has found as a true student of the game.”
