In 1916, Moffit’s father lied about his age and joined the Navy in order to fight in World War I. He was sent to Germany. During that time, a flu epidemic was claiming lives in America and abroad. “Germans and Allies were dying, not only from bullets,” Moffitt said, “but from the flu in those muddy trenches.”
