Damon and Angelina wonder why it is that we keep silent about the abuse that happens in our lives, families, institutions and society. Does it protect the victim, the perpetrator or other people who try to turn a blind eye to just how prevalent sexual and physical abuse is? If it is protecting the perpetrators more than the victims, then we need to start speaking up about this difficult topic more so that:
- perpetrators can face the consequences of their actions,
- perpetrators are deterred from committing additional abuse,
- victims can realise that they are not alone,
- victims can get a sense of justice and/or compensation for the harm that has been caused,
- victims can get more support and a chance to recover from the abuse, and
- the overall rate of abuse can decline.
