The impacts of climate change will be felt around the world, but few nations are as vulnerable as Small Island Developing States (SIDS). These countries face a unique set of challenges thanks to their small size, limited resources and exposure to climate impacts such as sea level rise, tropical cyclones and water shortages.
This month, the Pacific island of Samoa will host a UN conference on SIDS, to discuss the challenges they face and the ways to overcome them. Alongside the conference, members of the Climate Resilient Islands Partnership will host a side event to discuss how best to collaborate and build climate resilience.
The partnership, consists of the Caribbean Community Climate Change Centre (CCCCC), The Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) and the Indian Ocean Commission (IOC), and is supported by the Commonwealth Secretariat.
In connection with the conference in Samoa, Acclimatise will be speaking with representatives of each of these organisations to find out about the climate challenges for their respective regions, and to learn more about the Climate Resilient Islands Partnership. To get us started, Acclimatise's Will Bugler, caught up with Ginna Bonne, head of Climate Change, disasters and the environment at the Indian Ocean Commission. |
