Coasts: A new method for assessing coastal climate risks in the Mediterranean

Description: The Mediterranean coastline is an area of huge strategic importance for Europe, North Africa and the Middle East. As well as being the most popular tourist destination in the world, attracting one third of all international tourists, it is also a vital trading hub; home to over 100 sea ports handling around 30% of the world's merchant shipping. The region is also a climate change hot spot, with increased temperatures, sea-level rise and extreme events, threatening the coast. Designing methods to assess current and future climate risks is challenging for policy-makers and researchers. However a new report offers solutions in the form of a multi-scale, coastal risk index. I spoke with report authors Antoine Lafitte and Alessio Satta.
