Beyond Bathrooms: The Battle Over Transgender Rights

Category: News & Politics

Description: President Trump has made big news regarding the rights of transgender students. His administration has revoked federal guidelines specifying that transgender students have the right to use public school restrooms that match their gender identity – a move that has upset many, including Republicans. The stakes have now been raised for an upcoming Supreme Court case. The eight justices are due to hear oral arguments at the end of March on whether the Gloucester County School Board in Virginia can block Gavin Grimm, a female-born transgender high school student, from using the boys' bathroom. A ruling is due by the end of June. 1A explores this topic with Grace Dolan-Sandrino, an 11th grader at Duke Ellington School of the Arts in Washington, D.C., Peyton Chapman, Principal at Lincoln High School in Portland, Oregon, Matt Sharp, senior counsel at Alliance Defending Freedom and Tanya Washington, Professor of law at Georgia State University.
