Gene Baur, President of Farm Sanctuary talks about the problems with our food system and explore solutions both meat eaters and vegans can agree on. Gene has spent the past 30 years fighting for a more just food system and believes that “people should make food choices that are aligned with their own values and interests.” After all, we vote with our dollars every day and as he puts it, have a lot of power. In our conversation, we dive into how consumer habits are influencing the food industry and encouraging a shift away from animal proteins towards innovative plant-based alternatives. While Gene promotes the idea of eating whole, plant-based foods as the best bet for people, animals and the planet, he is a proponent of meat alternatives as a stepping stone to lead the way towards a more balanced food system. If we hope to feed a growing population of 9.7 billion people by the year 2050, we need to find viable solutions that transcend dietary labels. Gene believes we can help people make more humane, just and sustainable food choices by promoting localized, community-oriented agriculture – but there’s much more to it. To hear his thoughts on how we can transform the food system in the next 30 years, listen now!
