Kathy Freston is a wellness activist and writer with a focus on healthy eating and conscious living. She is the New York Times bestselling author of numerous books and has been featured on The Ellen Show and The Oprah Winfrey Show, as well as many others, talking about how a plant-based diet can revolutionize your personal health and positively impact animals and the planet as well. In this interview, Kathy and I talk about her latest book Clean Protein, which she co-wrote with Bruce Friedrich, the co-founder and executive director of the Good Food Institute, who I talked to back in episode 3 of this podcast. Even if you think you know everything about protein and plant-proteins, I can guarantee you will find this conversation incredibly interesting. Kathy starts off with discussing the problems with animal protein and what is clean protein, she then debunks many perceived health “truths,” such as whether or not plant-based proteins are “complete” or not. We also discuss the best sources of plant proteins, which sources have more protein than animal products, whether all plant-proteins are created equal and how plant-based meats and clean meat stack up against beans and lentils. Kathy also talks about the one nutrient that most Americans actually are deficient in and how to get more of it every day by opting for clean protein. In summary, this is a discussion about protein that ends all discussions around protein. Kathy shares her insights in an easy to understand way that will help you no matter how much, or how little knowledge you have about nutrition.
