What happens when three psychologists get in the same room to talk about a show about a girl who commits suicide? I speak with Dr. Corinna Correia and Dr. Whitney Smith about the controversial show "Thirteen Reasons Why" (with tons and tons of spoilers of course). We discuss its depiction of suicide, adolescence, sexual assault, things the show did well, and things the show completely missed the mark on (such as things a school counselor should never do). We dissect the potential messages viewers may get form the show as well as ways to create a dialogue between parents and teenagers around sensitive topics. And we talk about more fictional characters we'd like to see in therapy! |
