Episode 20 - Sports and Performance Psychology with Dr. Kensa Gunter

Category: Science & Medicine
Duration: 01:26:09
Publish Date: 2018-04-28 12:05:03
Description: Today on the show I interview clinical and sports psychologist Dr. Kensa Gunter (@DrKensa on Twitter and www.drkensagunter.com). We talk about what sport and performance psychology is and what it looks like to bring mental health and psychology to athletics. A huge and important area of psychology, sports and performance psychology have been integrated in major sports such as the WNBA, NFL, NHL, the olympics, and the X-Games. It’s even made its way into high school and college sports to help athletes perform at their best. We also discuss Dr. Gunter’s experience being a black cisgender southern Christian woman doing psychology. And for some reason we talk about Kevin Costner a bunch. Dr Gunter and I also talk about the film Black Panther, it’s themes, it’s characters, and other characters from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (the MCU if you will) we want to see in therapy. We talk about the importance of representation in media and how Black Panther achieves this goal. So be forewarned that there are some serious spoilers for that film and some of Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2 if you haven’t seen them yet. A special thank you to 1000 Faces Coffee in Athens, GA who were generous enough to allow me to record this episode at their great shop.
