Now, to the innovative automation - born of necessity - to oyster farming, developed by a Marlborough oyster farmer , and now being used internationally. Aaron Pannell (pron Panel) , and his wife Debbie, sarted Marlborough Oysters 12 years ago. They have a hatchery, and export their shellfish to 15 countries. But the challenging conditions in which they grow , and the eventual reach of an oyster parasite to their production, put their business under enormous pressure just a few short years ago. Oyster farming is a tough, physical, and labour intenstive business. As is the case so often, necessity was the mother of invention. As was good observation... Leading to a whole new automated system on their oyster farm - called `Flip Farm.' The second business , initially to make their own operation easier and more financially viable, is now running alongside the seafood operation, and drawing orders internationally. Flip Farm, which allows for much easier access, management and harversing of oysters grown in very deep waters, has also won awards. It's being used globally by 70 other oyster farmers. (we have a video on our webpage - and a gallery of pics) So, where was Aaron Pannell at , and what is the story behind that eureka moment to mechanise...? |
