Description: A Treaty of Waitangi claim has been filed by Ngaati Wairere over a proposed housing project in Hamilton, which would be on top of a historical site. The development is planned for the Sonning car park, owned by the Hamilton City Council and built on top of the Opoia Pā, whose rangatira, Poukawa, signed the Treaty of Waitangi. Ngaati Wairere historian Wiremu Puke says Hamilton doesn't have much knowledge of its Māori history, and the council is sanctioning the destruction of history. Mr Puke spoke to Kim Hill.
