Description:

Afghanistan is now under Taliban control. Some 11,000 Americans are still in the country as thousands of Afghans who aided Americans, fight to escape amid urgent fears for their safety. The Taliban have captured roughly 200 aircraft since May including U.S. supplied helicopters, as questions arise on the whereabouts of the billions of dollars-worth of weaponry that the U.S. has given Afghanistan. Former interpreter ‘Srosh’ joins to give a horrific account of his family’s treatment by the Taliban.

Florida Governor Ron Desantis puts politics ahead of people's lives as he continues to promote antibody treatment while rejecting basic safety measures. Texas Governor Greg Abbott has tested positive for Covid-19 the day after he spoke in a packed room of unmasked people and is said not to be symptomatic. He is now being treated with Regeneron. CNN’s Dr. Jonathan Reiner joins to discuss the Governors’ hypocritical stances on mask wearing.

As the L.A. Times reports on the Taliban beating people to control crowds using whips, sticks and gunfire, National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan says the U.S. is in talks with the Taliban to allow safe passage for Americans and Afghans who helped America during the long war to leave the country. Former Defense Secretary William Cohen joins to discuss the promises made to the Afghan people by the U.S. Government on their safety.

Right wing personalities are using the crisis in Afghanistan to push an anti-refugee sentiment, including Congresswoman Lauren Boebert who tweeted “the Taliban are the only people building back better”, as many Afghans fear for their lives.

Finally, the CDC says that 29.9% of eligible Americans have not been vaccinated. Just 33% of black New Yorkers are fully vaccinated, as community leaders battle hesitancy, myths and misinformation. CNN’s Athena Jones reports from New York, speaking to residents to gain their perspectives.
