Only 22 nurses have arrived in New Zealand from overseas since the government unveiled incentives to coax health workers here. They are among the 341 new additions to nursing in the past three months.
The rest who have had visas approved were already in the country. Aotearoa is about 4000 nurses short - with some rest homes struggling to keep the doors open.
And last week overwhelmed nurses around the country were refusing to work extra shifts in protest over pay and conditions.
Health Minister Andrew Little says immigration is just part of the answer to the shortage. |
