Description: Three years after the government announced it would scrap minimum wage exemptions and replace them with a wage subsidy, some disabled workers are still earning an average of just $5 an hour. Information obtained by Checkpoint from the Ministry of Business Innovation and Employment shows there are 169 disabled workers with the exemption. Under the Minimum Wage Act businesses can apply for an exemption to pay an employee with a dissability less than the minimum wage, on the basis they're less productive. Louise Ternouth and Nick Monro have the story.
