Introducing Chris Mene
On the 15th of March, 2019, I was out playing golf with a friend. When we got back to our car and he checked his phone, he turned to me with a shocked look on his face. There had been a terrorist attack against mosques in Christchurch.
And that's a little bit of an introduction into today's show with an amazing guest, Chris Mene.
Chris has some really deep experience with engaging communities following trauma. He played a big role for over 10 years in Christchurch following the earthquakes. He comes from a police background with training that has since been very helpful.
We talk through the story of Chris's involvement in the Royal commission of Inquiry into the Christchurch mosque attacks.
Whether you are engaging with that level of trauma in your work or not, I think everybody brings trauma with them into every group situation.
I think we as facilitators can learn a lot from somebody like Chris who has engaged in a context that has heavy with grief, so that in your situation, which might not be as intense, you can still pull lessons from what he has learned.
In today’s episode you’ll learn:
- What facilitators can do to prepare themselves for work in trauma settings.
- The importance of understanding the current context before walking into a situation.
- How examining and understanding ourselves is necessary for being an effective engagement practitioner.
- Why emotional limits are important for effective facilitation.
