My guest on the today’s podcast is a longtime resident of Cancun, Jim Wehrle. Jim moved from Fort Worth, Texas, 29 years ago, and still enjoys each day here on the Riviera Maya. When he first decided to visit a sunny place for his vacation, a travel agent tried to steer him towards Acapulco. He was young, and she thought he might enjoy the clubs and budding nightlife there, but when Jim heard about laid back, quiet place called Cancun on the Yucatan Peninsula, something just felt right to him. Jim’s history in the area dates back to when the Riviera Maya was called the tourist corridor. Everything has grown for the better, Jim says. The concern for the ecology, protecting the cenotes and mangroves; everything has been taken care of, even as the area has grown. After teaching English and then selling for the Palace Resorts, Jim finally found a company he enjoyed working for, Sunset World. He started in administration and during his 23 years with the company, has worked in every department. His current position is taking care of the organization’s Reputation Management, Social Media, and Internet divisions. He enjoys working in social media because it provides a real-time, two-way conversation between the supplier and the customer. During his free time, Jim enjoys growing exotic fruits and vegetables on his little piece of dirt, just outside of Cancun. He wishes more people would leave the hotels, when they come on vacation, so they could see the amazing little towns and ruins such as Tizimin and Ek Balam. Plus, people from all over the world open up restaurants in Cancun, which feature traditional foods of their home country. If you are planning to visit the area, the Hacienda Tres Rios hotel is an eco-minded hotel with some amazing things to do, such as kayaking through the mangroves, a sensory tour, and tequila tasting. This comes highly recommended from the Loco Gringo staff. Jim’s Hidden Gems: - Quinta Avenida — A cool metropolitan area to grab a beverage and people watch.
