Description:

For this week’s episode, I step out of the office and into the jungle. My guest Michael Maurus has lived in an off-grid treehouse in the deep jungle since the beginning of this year. He even has to start a fire before he can make his morning coffee.

Michael is originally from Bavaria, Germany. He made his way to the Riviera Maya by way of Munich, New York, Miami, and finally Cancun. He has lived in Mexico for 20 years, and much of that time was in Puerto Morelos. In an attempt to live the most authentic experience possible, he moved into the jungle, and provides visitors with personalized photography workshops along with a cultural journey.

Michael’s early fascination with photography began when his uncle would show him slideshows of his travel photography. Little Michael never imagined he would be working as a photographer in Mexico. Now, he knows this is where he is meant to be, and hopes his photos one day will help him to preserve and share his wonderful experiences.

For an authentic Mexican experience, Michael recommends visiting Colonia, in Puerto Morelos. The street food is amazing, and he says, interact with the local people as much as possible. Even if you don’t know any Spanish,  a smile is a great communication tool.
