Description: Transcript: Dalton came up with the idea of atoms as the ultimate particle. That is, an atom is a particle of each element which cannot be subdivided by chemical means. Different elements have atoms of different atomic weights, and Dalton discovered the rules by which they combine into compounds. He speculated that the microscopic particle corresponding to a compound is a molecule, a fixed proportion of two or more elements. For example, water can be understood in terms of one atom of oxygen and two atoms of hydrogen. The atoms of oxygen and hydrogen themselves cannot be further subdivided by chemical means.
