Description:

First came the shock, then the exodus. More than three-quarters of Nagorno-Karabakh's estimated 120,000 residents have fled since last week's lightning offensive by Azerbaijan overran the ethnic Armenian enclave. Azerbaijan's military has detained a former commander of Nagorno-Karabakh's separatist forces. That's in addition to Ruben Vardanyan, the former head of Karabakh's separatist government, who was charged with financing terrorism after his arrest while fleeing through the Lachin corridor.

Azerbaijan insists it has no more territorial designs. Still, President Aliyev's conciliatory discourse clashes with his choice of location to speak on Monday when he flew to Baku's own big exclave, Nakhchivan. Aliyev insists he absolutely will not try to take the Zangezur corridor by force and he invited his Turkish counterpart, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who said that if Armenia does not allow the trade corridor to pass through its territory then Iran was up for offering a detour.

A week ago at this time, we were commenting on Ukraine's s increased use of long-range weaponry and now, with US ATACMS missiles on the way soon, special forces in Kyiv are claiming that last week's attack wiped out Russia's top brass in Crimea, 34 officers including the commander of the Black Sea Fleet. But then Russian state media published images of Admiral Viktor Sokolov.

It's not every day you see a US president walking a picket line to support a strike. In fact, it has never happened before. Joe Biden travelled to Michigan where the United Auto Workers (UAW) is expanding its shutdown at all three big US automakers. Joe Biden was followed by a day to Michigan by Donald Trump. The Republican frontrunner skipped a second candidates' debate to visit a non-union auto parts maker outside Detroit and also to court those striking workers.

It was already a hot-button issue before the school year began in France and then during the first week of classes, a 15-year-old pupil at a vocational high school took his own life. Last December, his parents had alerted his establishment that he was the victim of persistent bullying. France's first lady, herself a former teacher, made the trip earlier this month to Poissy to meet with authorities and the family of Nicolas. This week, the government announced new measures to combat school bullying.
