He is the Director of Mazda Design Europe and has spent most of his career working for the Japanese Automaker. He is, however, not your typical petrol head. The Belgian’s creativity is deep-rooted in consumer product design and he studied Industrial Design in his home country. He is an avid collector of Dieter Rams products as well as obscure German ceramics. This probably explains the natural fit that he experienced as an Interior Designer. Prior to the pandemic, Jo and his wife have held pop-up boutiques in the living rooms of friends. These curated events were an exercise in getting to know the local people in their adopted home of Frankfurt. It was also a creative lesson in scratching an itch outside the world of Car Design. One of Jo’s other great past times includes hitting the road spontaneously with his wife in their Volkswagen T3 camper. We talked about all the above, including his time as a broke student making ends meet at the RCA as well as Japanese culture and how it influences Design. Despite the potential conceited tone that I have set in this description, it needs to be said that Jo is incredibly grounded. He is also the embodiment of a well-rounded designer that seeks inspiration in the most unlikely of areas. He is a gentleman with impeccable taste and a leader that commands respect in the quietest manner possible. I will be talking to a cross section of people that work in the Car Design Industry. These will include designers, digital and clay modellers, vis artists and colour & material designers.
