Mark and his partner, Ian Wride, started their motorcycle design company, Xenophya, out of a shed at Northumbria University and a 1500 pound grant. There was no grand plan, other than that neither of them was ready to give up student life and face the world of employment. Xenophya evolved into an unorthodox madhouse that developed a stellar reputation in motorcycle design and for over a decade, created many successful products for brands such as Aprilia, Royal Enfield, and Triumph. Mark and Ian learnt everything by simply doing. This applied to design, modelling, fabrication, but also to their business. There was no blueprint or roadmap as neither had worked in other design studios. Ultimately they did things that felt intuitively right and married this with a work ethic that would make most of us feel shameful. Like many small businesses, their word and reputation meant everything and this grew stronger with every project. After a long and successful relationship with Royal Enfield, the company made them an offer to establish a Design Studio in the UK, which Mark and Ian now run. I will be talking to a cross section of people that work in the Car Design Industry. These will include designers, digital and clay modellers, vis artists and colour & material designers. The focus of our conversations will be centered around personal processes and experiences within the business. My aim is to demystify some of the preconceptions about this industry and give people an unadulterated glimpse into the business. I also wish to give the younger generation the opportunity to see that the people that these professionals come in different shapes and sizes and some of them will be unknown.
