The main objective of varṇāśrama, is to surrender to Kṛṣṇa ultimately—but while we’re practicing Kṛṣṇa consciousness, there are ways in which we can also make sure that we have, so to speak, "two feet on the ground."
Consider the fact that chanting Hare Kṛṣṇa is sufficient for going back home, back to Godhead; nothing else is needed. That’s proved in the last verse of the Śaraṇāgati by Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākura, where he describes how, by his chanting of the mahā-mantra, Lord Kṛṣṇa personally comes and takes him by the hand—or more accurately, the Holy Name comes and takes him by the hand—back to Godhead, and introduces him to his relationship with the Supreme Personality of Godhead in the spiritual world.
However, you’ll find in the Caitanya-caritāmṛta that although Lord Caitanya says there’s no need for any initiation even for chanting the Holy Name of the Lord, the purport is specifically about (and it’s written by Jīva Gosvāmī; Prabhupāda’s transcription of his directions on this) that initiation is very much needed because, in order to purely chant Hare Kṛṣṇa, one also has to have the pāñcarātrika system.
I’m making a parallel between this and the idea of varṇāśrama, because there’s a way in which, when we come into the material world, we’re prone to confusion. There are complexities and impurities. Therefore, when we have a regulation of the daivi-varṇāśrama—a way in which we can be properly situated at the various segments of our life when we have a particular psycho-physiological nature—then we can remain steady in the chanting of the Hare Kṛṣṇa mahā-mantra.
So, we have a dual existence in this world: we have our body-mind and we are the ātmā. But the endeavor to continue chanting Hare Kṛṣṇa and be engaged is helped by the regulation that we get from the varṇāśrama system. Therefore, the two things complement one another in that sense. However, if somebody thinks that varṇāśrama is the ultimate goal and forgets about Kṛṣṇa, then it’s useless and has no real purpose, because it’s related to the three modes of material nature.
