Why do some people refuse to wear masks? Why are others convinced that the Covid-19 vaccine is, at best, ineffective and, at worst, that it contains a microchip used by Bill Gates in order to track people? Dorry Segev, professor of epidemiology at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, thinks part of the fear and misinformation around public health measures is down to “a failure to find common, compassionate ground”. Scientists and public health officials should be reaching people at their level and this means no more dry, finger-wagging tones, he says. Dorry himself uses music as a medium. In this episode, he treats us to a rendition of Memory from the musical Cats but with a covid-19 spin on it! Want more? Check out his parody of ‘My Shot’ from Hamilton here. Dorry Segev was speaking at Web Summit 2021, in conversation with Curtis Brainard, managing editor at Scientific American. This week’s episode was hosted by Web Summit’s Luke Prendeville.
