Protesters gathered Monday at the ICE Field Office in Baltimore in response to a Christmas Eve shooting involving ICE agents in Glen Burnie.
Authorities said ICE agents shot and wounded the driver of a vehicle they claimed rammed into their vehicle.
The protest, organized by the People’s Power Assembly, called on getting ICE out of Maryland — and everywhere else, for that matter.
“We consider that our duty to be out here, speak up against what’s happening,” said one protestor. “Put pressure on lawmakers to stop collaborating with ICE — abolish the agency altogether. Put the money toward something good.”
According to witnesses, ICE agents followed the driver, identified by authorities as Tiago Alexandre Sousa-Martins, from a nearby Walmart.
Agents caught up with him in a parking lot while he was playing a game on his phone, authorities said.
ICE officials said Sousa-Martins is an undocumented immigrant from Portugal. Agents said Solomon Antonio Serrano-Esquivel, an undocumented immigrant from El Salvador, was in the passenger seat.
ICE officials said agents approached the vehicle and instructed the driver to turn off the engine. The driver refused and attempted to flee. ICE said the driver weaponized his vehicle and began ramming his van into several ICE vehicles.
Authorities said Sousa-Martins then drove his van directly at officers, attempting to run them over. Several residents told WBAL-TV 11 News they then heard several gunshots. One witness said they heard as many as four.
The van ended up in a wooded area. According to police, the driver is in stable condition and being treated for a gunshot wound. ICE said the passenger suffered a whiplash injury.
Residents said they provided Anne Arundel County police with Ring camera video of the shooting.
Police are handling the shooting investigation. The FBI is handling the assault against federal agents case, and the ICE Office of Professional Responsibility is conducting an internal investigation.
“Folks may wonder why there are three components to this thing,” said Anne Arundel County Police Chief Amal Awad. “It is a multi-layered incident.”
The protestors said they support upcoming proposed state legislation that would ban local police cooperation with ICE. |
