Stats from “The Myth of the Dying Church” by Glenn Stanton The percent of Evangelical (Bible believing) Christians in the U.S. has grown from 18% in 1989 to 28% in 2016 (page 17) The percent of Mainline (Liberal) ‘Christians’ in the U.S. has dropped from 35% in 1972 to 12% in 2016 (p 18). This is largely where the “nones” have come from. Those who attend church in the United States was 17% in 1776, 34% in 1850, 51% in 1906, and 69% in 2016 (p 22). The number of WEEKLY attenders from all denominations is only 35%, down from 44 percent in the mid 1950’s (p 22). But the number of those who attend MORE than once a week is UP since 1970 (p 23) Those with traditional Biblical faith accounted for 47% of actual church attenders in 2017, up from 39% in 1989 (p 19). Evangelicals now constitute a clear majority (55%) of all U.S. Protestants (p 31). The percent of 18-29 year olds attending church regularly is its highest since 1972. The percent of 18-29 year olds who self-identify as evangelicals has doubled from 1972 to 2016 (p100). From 2009 to 2017, attendance at Young Life’s weekly high school clubs has increased by 31% in the U.S., and 416% globally (p 145). InterVarsity collegiate ministry has grown 14% in its numbers over the last 5 years. In 2017 they had their highest number of new Christians EVER (p146-147). New student enrolment at Christian Colleges is up 17% from 2003 to 2015 (p148). Only 1% of churches close each year, while the average annual close rate for all other community organizations is over 5% (p144) The growth of Evangelical denominations globally is up 43% from 2000 to 2017 (page 150). The total number of Christians in Africa is up 408%; in Asia its 324%; in Latin America its 124%; in Oceania its 71% (p 79). 71% of people in Sub-Saharan Africa attend church WEEKLY (p 86). The Protestant Church in China has grown by an average of 10% each year since 1979 (p 87)! Foreign missionaries are up 2% from 2000 to 2017 (p151).
