Welcome back to part 2, we’re just about to hear how one day completely changed the course for Sebastian’s life. You can find part 1 of the series here.
As you can see, I have a lot of questions and not many answers. It’s a complicated situation and it will be a tough case, it will be tough for the jury to decide who’s case is stronger. As a friend, I hope Sebastian can win but I also empathise with the point of view of the accuser. What I have learnt is that I know very little about this topic, and I have a lot to learn, and many more questions to ask.
Here’s the bigger idea, anybody who’s wise, anybody who’s done a lot of living and learning, anybody who has grown out of the adolescent phase where they think they know everything, starts to realise the more that you learn, the more you realise that you don’t actually know a lot about something. Some things we take as truths and facts later reveal themselves to be not real. An example is old wives tales or a film by Christopher Nolan. I don’t know what happened on that day, so I can’t pass judgment, and I ask out of respect that others do the same unless you’re the judge or you’re the jury. It reminds me of this quote: “We judge ourselves by our intentions but we judge others by their actions.” Don’t forget how easily we ostracize others and fail to consider how easily we could be misjudged ourselves. Sebastian could be any man, and the accuser could be any woman.
Before we start part 2, I’d like to acknowledge that this is a one-sided story and I pay my respects to the accuser in the trial and apologise to my audience that there is no female representation in this episode. While this is only a one-sided view, I want to reassert my belief in gender equality, and my goal with future episodes is to build a more balanced view of this issue that affects every single one of us. It could happen to anyone. I recently finished an episode on sexism experienced by Singaporean entrepreneur, Krystal Choo, she opens up about how she battles and overcomes sexism.
