For this episode of Radio EVA, EVA Executive Director David Luna welcomed Sr. Phylis Peters and Lupita Sanchez to discuss their work with Proyecto Juan Diego, a member of the Rio Grande Valley Equal Voice Network based in Brownsville, Texas.

Sr. Phylis, Daughter of Charity and Executive Director of Proyecto Juan Diego, founded the organization in 2003 to support families in Cameron Park, one of the poorest communities in the U.S.

Lupita is the Assistant Administrator and past Coordinator for Community Action Services at Proyecto Juan Diego, and has helped steer the organization’s work to bring basic services to Cameron Park, a colonia, or unincorporated neighborhood, outside of Brownsville.

Sr. Phylis and Lupita discussed the organization’s citizenship education, voter engagement, and diabetes health care programs as part of Proyecto Juan Diego’s holistic approach to supporting and empowering families in Cameron Park and throughout the Rio Grande Valley.

Sharing on-the-ground updates, they addressed the damaging impact of “zero tolerance” immigration policy on local communities, as well as the importance of Census 2020 in ensuring fair representation and funding for their district, and all U.S. districts, in the coming years.

Sr. Phylis and Lupita also shared strategies and takeaways drawing on their significant experience in community outreach and empowerment.
