This is the recycling of our political office holders to vacate to continue in political offices as through the power of incumbency.

There is a Godfather situation, where political candidates are favoured by certain political godfathers. We have seen different types/approach to godfatherism: there are self-styled godfathers who trade their political capital to put candidates in office and there are godfathers who grew into it based on the popularities, privileges and powers they enjoyed while in office themselves - in the latter we have had, the likes of Late Adedibu of Oyo state and the Bola Tinubu of Lagos state, Late Olusola Saraki in Kwara to mention a few.
In a bid to build their political hegemonies a, we have seen governors after the completion of their constitutional tenures 'retiring' to the national assembly by default. Since the Fourth Republic, governors, for example, have been known to retire in Senate after their terms. The current 8th Senate has 15 past governors as senators including the recently convicted Joshua Dariye of Plateau state.
At the moment, about 8 outgoing governors have made known their ambition to run for the senatorial seats in their constituencies. |
