"The Mumbai Fire Brigade had a vacancy of 789 and as per government resolution, 30% of vacancy was there for women Good News for Mumbai! For the first time in the history of fire brigade, it has recruited 97 firewomen from the rural Maharashtra. Up till now, the Mumbai fire brigade just had 18 women firewomen. Usually, women personnel are majorly recruited from Sinnar in Nashik district of Maharashtra, Sindhudurg, Jalgaon etc. Meanwhile, 18 firewomen are operating from Fire Brigade headquarters in Byculla. The new lot will be destined across 34 different fire stations from the next month onwards and will be introduced to new stations. The force as of now has 145 employees. HW News Network met these women at the regional command centre, Vadala while their drill session “smoke apparatus gallery” which creates actual fire scenario. According to the chief fire officer P Rahangdale, in the recent past, it is the first time such huge number of women are hired in the fire brigade,”We had a vacancy of 789 and as per government resolution, 30% of vacancy was there for women. We started providing them training in June and plan to finish the training by month end before induction. Once the training is completed, they will get 14 days break after which they have to follow the service. He added, “We have our own training programs before induction and we call both male and female applicants that are tested on their emotional strength, physical strength and mental toughness as these are necessary elements to become a firefighter”. He stressed on Gender equality and confirmed training them on equal terms. “We don’t discriminate between male firefighter and women firefighter as they are going to perform a similar task of saving lives”, said he. There should be an equal opportunity one should encourage women empowerment.
