Pt. Dashrath Bhailal Mahavir (1911 - 1984) from Nickerie, Suriname, was one of the most prominent singers in Suriname in the early days. Together with his brother on dholak, Dadiem Mahavir, he formed a legendary duo, which was known throughout the West Indies. Next to his accomplishments in music, he also gained fame for his merits on religious and cultural aspects by for example teaching hindi. In 1966 he was awarded with the Royal Award in the Order of Honor of Oranje-Nassau. His performances were regularly broadcasted by radio stations as Radio Nickerie (Rani), Radio Paramaribo (Rapar), Radio Demerara (Guyana) and Radio Trinidad (Trinidad and Tobago).
