Join host Pam Kroskie as she interviews Marja Vongerichten from PBS's "Kimchi Chronicles.
Marja Vongerichten is the host of PBS's "Kimchi Chronicles," which airs in the US as well as internationally in countries such as Korea, France, Philippines and Spain. She is also the author of a companion cookbook "Kimchi Chronicles: Korean Cooking for an American Kitchen." Marja has introduced her own brand of Korean restaurant called “Kimchi Goddess,” and has created her own line of Korean food products, “Marja’s Original.” Marja has helped to introduce Korean food and culture to America.
Marja's remarkable life story begins in Uijeongbu, South Korea where she was born to a Korean mother and an American soldier. She was adopted at the age of 3 by a Colonel in the U.S. Marine Corps, then stationed in South Korea, and his wife, a Civil Rights attorney. The family moved to the Washington, DC area where Marja was raised along with her brother, also adopted in South Korea, and her younger sister. Marja attended the Duke Ellington School of Performing Arts. She was crowned Miss District of Columbia Teen USA. She attended Fisk University in Nashville, TN.
With the help of documents provided by her adoptive parents, Marja found her Korean birth mother when she was 19. She also reconnected with her Korean roots, family, culture and food in South Korea. She never forgot the tastes and smells of Korean cooking. "Kimchi Chronicles" was Marja's journey of rediscovery through a distinct, personal and authentic lens. |
