Jayne Belnap is the world’s foremost expert on biological soil crusts – the living, breathing skin of symbiotic microbes that covers the soil surface in some of the harshest regions of the world. She is also the Director of Canyonlands Biological Research Station in Canyonlands National Park in Utah, where she has been working to conserve these delicate crusts, and their critical ecosystem functions, during the massive boom of outdoor tourism in Utah. She discusses how her experience working with different groups – such as ranchers, mountain bikers, and the energy industry – has provided her valuable insights into broader environmental discussions we are having in the country. |
