Childhood’s End 1 – The Overlords

Category: TV & Film
Duration: 01:47:43
Publish Date: 2022-01-12 16:57:04
Description:

I think we should rename ourselves to Podcasting Overlords.

Isn’t it weird how the word “lord” is used in a lot of sci-fi? Like Time Lords… Overlords… Lords of Time…. lords… Look this was a way better point when I started this sentence than when I finished it. So you’re just going to have to pretend to agree with me. It’s The Overlords, written by Matthew Graham and aired on December 14, 2015.

Show-notes:
1:11: Get your own copy of the book here, at Barnes and Noble. For once I decided not to link amazon.
1:56: Xenogears is an rpg… or something.
3:14: I’ve actually struggled to find an actual text quote of Kurt Vonnegut saying this, but to be fair I’ve struggled to find Vonnegut saying anything about Arthur C. Clarke even though they were well acquainted.
12:24: Arthur C. Clarke refers to “President Bush [senior]” in his introduction. Interestingly he also refers to the TV show V, which will get mentioned later in this podcast, in the same introduction as being a perfectly acceptable (to him) adaptation of Childhood’s End.
21:33: A lot of my information on the behind the scenes “creation of” Childhood’s End is coming from this article here.
22:45: And the second article I’m referring to is this Rolling Stone article, which has much of the same information.
27:32: If you go and listen to our episodes on The Prisoner (2009) you can hear some of this confusion, especially towards the end of the season.
31:49: Fully synthetic plastic was actually invented as early as 1907.
59:04: Daisy.
1:23:30: I don’t know how I forgot this, but the quote is from The Last Jedi, it’s Yoda talking to Luke.
1:25:33: Her name is Jennifer Anne.
