A man recently sent me an inspiring e-mail about an experience he had. He wrote, “one year ago our family was going on a Shabbat Chanukah get-away to a destination which required a plane ride. A half hour prior to boarding, I noticed that my cell phone battery was very low. It was important for me to have my phone fully charged upon landing, as we needed to meet up with the realtor to choose which house we would be renting. The name and contact information of the realtor as well as the addresses of the homes were all stored on my phone. I found a charging port not too far from our gate and I took a seat next to my charging phone. One of my children then came over to me and requested that I come sit next to everyone else by our gate and, of course, I went along. I got busy, trying, unsuccessfully, to arrange that we all sit together on the plane as they had split us up into two different sections. We boarded and, shortly after takeoff, as I was thinking about the treatise on Chanukah entitled Shir Shel Pegaim, which I had just printed l’ilui nishmat my Rabbi, on his yahrtzeit , and given out to my friends. I wanted to look at the contacts on my phone to make sure I didn’t leave anyone out. To my dismay, my phone had disappeared. I looked through my bags. I walked over to where my wife was sitting and checked through her bags. It didn’t take me long to realize that, in my distracted state, I left my phone, with all the vital information on it, charging in the airport miles away down below. Then it hit me, what am I going to do, landing without a name or a number or an address to contact? Our entire trip will be ruined. I quickly approached the flight attendant and told her my plight, pleading with her to do something to help. Maybe she could contact the airport so, at least, they could get ahold of my phone. ‘Sorry, we have no Wi-Fi connection on this plane,’ was her response, ‘but I’ll see what I can do.’ Ten minutes later she came back to tell me the pilot contacted the airport on my behalf, but no one turned up a lost phone. I thanked her for her efforts and I suggested that she please have someone in the airport go to the gate to pick up the phone before somebody decides to walk off with it. She said she would see what she could do. As I was nervously sitting and waiting, I started making a cheshbon hanefesh to figure out, maybe there was a message Hashem was sending me. I also reminded myself of what I wrote in the treatise which was about halacha and aggadah, and also deals with the subject of realizing that everything is in the hands of Hashem. I turned to Hashem and said, ‘Hashem, I don’t know how it is possible to get me out of this mess, but I know with a full heart You have a way and You could help me. Please help me, Hashem.’ A few minutes later I got up to check with the flight attendant to see if there were any developments and she told me she hadn’t heard anything yet. She’d let me know if she did. And then it happened. As I was returning to my seat, a passenger on the plane stopped me as he was pulling out a phone with a charger attached to it. He said, ‘This is your phone, right?’ I said, ‘Yes, my phone! That’s my phone! How did you get it?’ Well, it turns out, he boarded the plane after me, and he saw a phone with nobody around it so he reasoned, ‘Why should I let the next person steal it when I could take it for myself?’ However, when he saw and heard my panic about the phone, Hashem placed in his heart some compassion for my sorrow and he decided to return it to me. On a side note, as he returned it he said, ‘It’s yours. You can have it,’ as if he was giving me something he rightfully owned. Needless to say, I was extremely shocked and happy at the same time. I thanked the Ribono Shel Olam for the yeshua He sent me. However, as I got back to myself and I thought about what transpired, I realized a new dimension into Chazal’s words that Hashem brings the salvation before the wound. When a person is stuck, lo alenu , in a troubling time, he thinks, I'll pray to Hashem and hopefully things will change around and Hashem will create a salvation for me . The truth is, however, when Hashem sends a trouble, the salvation is equally standing by. We don’t need to ask Hashem to create a new salvation for us. We need to ask Him to reveal the salvation that He prepared already. We might be thinking, It’s the end, there’s no way out of this . But in essence, there’s no trouble at all. Hashem already prepared the salvation and it’s there waiting for us. Here I was thinking, I’m stuck with no way out of the situation, and the solution to my problem was a mere few aisles in front of me. Hashem had prepared it for me by having that man steal my phone from me, for me. Had he not stolen it, I wouldn’t have had it. Had he not decided to return it, I wouldn’t have had it. But after the cheshbon hanefesh and prayer that I made to Hashem, which He was waiting for, it was all revealed.” This situation happened to be a relatively small problem, but as the Steipler once said, when a person is experiencing any type of trouble, to him it is very big. We could take this lesson and apply it to all situations, to all troubling times, and understand the yeshua is there already. All that is necessary is for Hashem to reveal it for us. |
