We are constantly being faced with decisions to make. Some are small decisions, like which route to take to a destination, and some are very big decisions, like which yeshiva we should send our children to. Whenever there is a crucial decision to be made, we should consult with da’at Torah and act accordingly. Whenever we do make a decision, we should feel that Hashem gave us the exact information necessary to choose the way we did, because thats what was meant to be. Sometimes, even after we take counsel and do our due diligence, there doesn’t seem to be a right decision. Of course, we always need Hashem’s help in making decisions, and we should always pray to Him to guide us with those decisions. But in those situations, when we need extra siyata d’shamaya , we have to know, Hashem could give us the answer in an instant. He can make a very tough decision easy. He could open our eyes and make things crystal clear. If we sincerely depend on Hashem for our help, He’ll be there to guide us in the way we need to go. The sefer Viniflaotav Livneh Adam tells a story which took place not too long ago. A man from Israel had a minor heart attack. The doctor told him he would be able to live a normal life in the condition he was in, he just needed to take a few extra precautions. He told him if he ever felt any type of heart concern, he should immediately come to the hospital. One day, he felt some pain in the chest area, and he quickly went to the emergency room. After a number of tests and CAT scans, they discovered a growth near that area. His doctor told him, “The growth is dangerous and, normally, I would tell you to operate immediately and remove it, but because of your heart condition, the surgery would also be very dangerous.” There was silence in the room. The man asked the doctor, “Well, what’s more dangerous?” The doctor replied, “They are equally dangerous. The decision will need to be yours. I’m willing to do whatever you say, but you have to be the one to choose.” The man was in great fear; his life was on the line. Before doing anything, he asked the doctor if he could have some private time to think. When the doctor left the room, he began talking to Hashem in his own words. He said, “Hashem, my life is in Your hands. I have relied on You until today, and I will rely on You once again now.” He opened his Tehillim and started reading in tears. He begged Hashem to give him clarity. Then he began thanking Hashem for everything he could think of in his life and for everything that happened in his past. After his heartfelt tefilot and long list of thank-yous, the doctor walked back in. He said, “I was thinking about it a little more. If this surgery would last for less than four hours, it really would not pose danger to your heart. The standard time for this surgery is three hours, and therefore, I recommend we go ahead with it now.” The man was overcome with gratitude to Hashem for this sudden change in the doctor’s mind. How could things change so drastically when twenty minutes before the doctor was in such a quandary? That was Hashem helping this man with his decision making process. It was an impossible decision to make, and, in an instant, Hashem made it the easiest decision. Baruch Hashem, everything went fine. There is always a solution. The more we rely on Hashem, the more Siyata D’Shamaya He’ll give us. |
