On Monday a five-judge bench of the Supreme court comprising Chief Justice of India U U Lalit, Justices Dinesh Maheshwari, S Ravindra Bhat, Bela M Trivedi and J B Pardiwala, upheld the 103rd amendment act which introduces a 10 per cent quota for Economically Weaker Sections (EWS). This amendment raises multiple questions, especially about the concept of reservation and the constitutional validity of the 103rd amendment. And in this episode, Indian Express’ Apurva Vishwanath joins us to unpack the debates and how the Supreme Court has historically looked at the question of reservation based on economic criteria alone.
