Description:

Today we’re speaking with Khyati Sundaram the CEO of Applied, a company that is reinventing selection and recruitment. In the same way that the light bulb was not a reengineered a candle, Applied has not a reengineered the job posting and resume review process. Applied has instead utterly reimagined selection and recruitment. They have not made what exists better, but rather used behavioral and data science to invent a system that makes the existing process obsolete.

Using their approach they are able to attract applicants that might not have applied for job opportunities, identify candidates that would have been overlooked through traditional resume screening, compress the recruiting timeline and improve the diversity of the organizations that work with them.

True to their origins, Applied also uses data to assess their success. The proof is in the pudding and they have found that candidates sourced and selected through their process are 20% more likely to be retained than the UK’s national average. With some studies putting the cost of turnover at six to nine months’ salary, the benefit of working with Applied goes beyond the expansion of diverse candidates.

Topics discussed include:

  • Why the recruiting process, as it currently exists, is broken.
  • Why the first step toward diversifying your workforce is creating inclusive job descriptions.
  • How resume screening perpetuates the status quo and why none of the information it provides is actually predictive of applicant success.
  • How situational questions can be used to identify candidates with transferable skills and expand the number of qualified candidates who also possess a diversity of backgrounds experiences150.
  • Why asking every candidate the same series of questions is critical to creating an equitable interview process.

Khyati Sundaram is the CEO of Applied, a behavioral science backed tool for smart & fair hiring. She headed product development at Applied before this. In her former life, her pursuits range from co-founding and leading an AI based company looking at sustainable supply chains to having worked in investment banking with the likes of JP Morgan and RBS. She has a breadth of experience in data science, product development, and fundraising. She holds an MSc in Economics (specializing in game theory) from the London School of Economics and an MBA from London School of Business (with an exchange at the Wharton School).

Applied is a hiring platform that uses world-leading behavioral science to remove unconscious bias and improve predictive validity. They do this by using research-backed methods to replace traditional methods of hiring (like CV/resume screens) with work-simulation based assessments and designing out bias from candidate scoring by anonymizing candidate answers. They’ve been able to show that by redesigning hiring processes, they can have a significant impact on the quality of decisions and the resulting diversity profile of hires. They have helped hire >5000 people, and their studies show that 60% of these candidates would have otherwise been overlooked; they are also disproportionately likely to come from under-represented groups. They now support teams across 170 organizations, 15 countries and across all sectors looking to make their hiring process more effective, efficient and fair.
