Broome wastewater update

Description: The wastewater from our homes is valuable but hazardous. Rino Trolio, Water Corporation's North-West Regional Manager, talks about both sides of the coin. In Broome North, wastewater is treated, chlorinated and reused for irrigation. The reuse water grows Rhodes grass, which is then sold to local cattle stations. In Broome South, reuse water irrigates playing fields and ovals. However, the Broome South treatment ponds have aging, old-fashioned linings, suspected of leaking nutrients into Roebuck Bay. The Department of Environmental Regulation has declared the Broome South ponds a contaminated site. The Water Corporation was ordered to investigate. What will happen if the investigation reveals a leak? Kat finds out. Aired on Radio Goolarri, 18th May 2015
