Description: Lauren Marshall Aussie illustrator and comic enthusiast. We kick off the show talking about the art community in Australia and how tight knit it is. Lauren talks about life at the Cons and how the network has gotten closer and the artists help each other. Although Australia has a strong arts community they have a lot in common with the U.S. and often arts are the first to be cut when school budgets get cut. She attended art school for college and learned 2D illustration and animation. Learning on paper with a light box it taught her valuable experience about the foundations of animation and drawing. Unfortunately, when she graduated the industry was very slow and she wasn’t yet willing to leave Perth. Animation wasn’t really hiring in the area and 3d didn’t interest her so Lauren found an interest in comics and illustration. “I did the con and had a huge response I realized I can actually do this, people like my work.” – Lauren Marshall on her first pivotal gig in comics. Lauren explains her technique and the tools she uses, including pen and ink, Copic markers and Photoshop. We talk about fan art and how much collectors and con-goers love it. She talks about the fun of drawing fan art but also the challenges of drawing well known characters as well as the challenges of creating original work. We talk about collaboration and working with the art community. Lauren shares that she has done line work and had Dave Atze color it. We talk about importance of collaboration and reaching out to the vast artist community that is out there and readily available. This goes hand in hand with building a steady and loyal following.
