Description: Dado Almeida is a concept artist and illustrator based in Brazil. He’s worked for companies like Aquiris, Space Inch, BR4Games, Izyplay, and TGC. Dado started out with a general interest in 3D and classified himself as a professional Polycount lurker. He learned everything he could from the contributors there. He loves the content and how many of the professionals are straight to the point and focus on criticism, but more importantly, are willing to help someone who is in the learning phase. “The internet was my teacher.” – Dado on art education. His first job was as a journalist writing articles in a PC magazine. Once he was approached to write an article about 3D Studio Max (which is what he was told was used to build Diablo), he gained an interest in digital arts, gaming and 3D. After working in 3D for a few years and teaching several courses in 3D he started a studio with his co-teachers, specializing in gaming. After they lost their concept artist, Dado filled the shoes and fell in love with 2D art and illustration. We talk about Dado’s social media presence and specifically about his Patreon page in which he focuses on retro game art and design. He offers his process, PSD files, time lapses and education. He talks about how Jake Parker influenced him but he says, “I give Mark Zuckerburg free artwork every week. Why not get paid for it?” He started a Patreon, Instagram and Youtube channel to teach people the basics of illustration, design and animation. “If I can‘t get the job I want, I’ll make the job I want.” – Dado on professional work and social media The panel gets heated as we discuss YouTubes new “Advertiser-friendly content guidelines” that has upset the internet. We discuss the ethics of the moderating content and controlling it by using advertising as a bargaining chip. While still all heated up, Carlos decides to jump on and discuss the debate over Colin Kaepernick.
