Well Carlos messes us up right off the bat asking which people like better, the Star Trek reboots or the Star Wars reboots. We quickly divert in an effort to save lives, which only leads us to talking about Apple’s new announcement of removing the headphone jack… If nothing else it lead us to chat about audio. Jake started early just by listening music as a child. He’d listen to a song and try to recreate it any way he could, most memorably on his dad’s four track machine. Growing up in Arlington, VA near Washington DC he would sneak out of the house as a young teenager to go to the jazz shows or jam sessions in DC. Jake ultimately ended up in L.A. which first landed him a job composing for feature film where he worked on Captain America, then a gig at Nickelodeon composing for animation and now as a freelancer working on everything from music production, to feature music. “I feel like being a producer, you’re helping people achieve their dreams. But…anyone can have a dream.” – Jake Knox on music production. We break into music talk and just about the sheer number of instruments Jake is able to play, now he downplays it and says all string instruments are essentially the same, but the list goes on and on nonetheless. We talk about the differences between being a jack-of-all-trades or an expert in one single talent. Jake shares his experiences as learning many different skills, instruments, and software and sustaining work in the competitive field where anyone can go on YouTube and learn to play guitar. The panel discusses technology and how the easy access of information has made it incredibly easy to actually become a jack of all trades and learn new skills. We chat about the pitfalls of technology that makes complicated tasks easier and makes anyone feel like they are an expert. What separates the professionals from everyone else? And on that note, what has changed in the industry, musically or otherwise? Where have the long format albums that can be listened to front to back gone? What was the last album you listened to beginning to end? Jake Knox – http://www.jake-knox.com/ Twitter: @JakeKnoxMusic Sketch Zone – http://www.sketch.zone Twitter: @SketchZone Carlos R.
