Carlos is a US Army veteran with an affection for the creative industry. His wide-ranging skills of storytelling, illustration and programming have proven useful in the creative and technology industries. For many years, he was a Flash developer and got to work on many exciting projects for some really splendid companies. Now that the industry has changed, he is able to return to his true passion – telling stories by using cartoons, illustration, video, and graphic design.
He gained his experience by working with companies that include 20th Century Fox, 360 Jets, ABC, Allscripts, Beneful, CitiBank, Cook Islands, Disney, Dreamworks, Duke University, Friskies, HBO, Hallmark, Hallmark Channel, Hoodie Buddies, Kellogg’s, MasterCard, Mattel, Miller Lite Racing, Philip Morris USA, Philip Morris International, RIM (Blackberry), Sears US/Canada, Tom Cruise, Universal , Nokia, Now Media, Visa, and Warner Brothers.
We start off with Charlie talking about his trip to Savannah, Georgia and SCAD’s art fair. Charlie was impressed with the way the city looks, the boulevards are lined with trees and flowers, the architecture is like New Orleans and the views were great. He attended the student showcase to see the students’ work, review it, critique it and also look for potential new hires.
This is the first year NextNow has attended, looking for talent. Charlie helped run a NextNow booth and he was impressed with preparedness of the students and their interest and passion. AR and VR are huge and up and coming, he was surprised how much interest there was for his booth. SCAD had a great partner program where they pair students or group projects with the major players in the industry like Pixar and Sony and get inside information and feedback from the people in the trenches.
“Savannah is like New Orleans…but clean.” – Charlie on Savannah, Georgia
Carlos talks about Vero, the new social media app, and how it might be a new viable solution to the older, more established platforms. That said, there are already a few stories coming out about the developers, the original founder and the potential downfalls of the platform itself. Are there true competitors to the big social platforms or is the viral nature of the internet just creating false starts? Should the founders’ history play a part in the success of the app? Vero’s CEO is also being accused of utilizing programmers and laborers that didn’t get paid and are now rioting in revolt as their response to workers’ rights.
