Stephen Silver was born in London, England on August 30, 1972. Aspiring to be a professional artist his whole life and knowing drawing would be his vocation, he got his professional start in 1992 drawing caricatures at Sea World in San Diego.
Stephen has designed characters for Disney Television Animation, Sony Feature Animation and Nickelodeon Animation, designing the style of the shows such as "Kim Possible", "Danny Phantom" Kevin Smith's "Clerks" the animated series, and many more.
Stephen is the author and artist of 7 self-published books on the art of sketching, character design, caricature and life drawing. In addition to working freelance, and doing lectures, he is the owner of Silver Drawing Academy, an art school, located in Los Angeles, CA. He also teaches two character design courses online @ schoolism.com.
Stephen shares that he had an interest in drawing as long as he can remember, growing up watching the Hanna-Barbera classics. Then at age 11 he discovered Norman Rockwell and his mind was really opened. Following that, around age 13, he found MAD magazine, which caused him to see cartoons in newspapers, comics, political cartoons, serial boxes, everywhere! His parents were very supportive of his artistic interest but didn’t want to pay for the expensive art school.
After moving out, with the motivation to make a living, he found freelance gigs and his first drawing job was as a caricature artist at Sea World in San Diego which really grew his thick artist skin. In 1997, with his sharpened drawing skills and with a thicker skin he was able to get a gig in LA on a show called “Histeria” with Warner Brothers. This opened up the door to many other gigs with Cartoon Network, Sony and Disney.
Stephen talks a lot about how to become a better artist and simply doing it, getting in there, not thinking and doing. There will be failures and faults, but he firmly believes that art is often really more about quantity over quality and quality will catch up. Simply doing, develops those skills, teaches short cuts, builds habits, and explores skill sets; naturally the quality will follow.
