Description: If today you went blind, would you still be able to perform your job? Think about all the tasks you do on a daily basis, how many of them require sight? Would you be able to do any of these tasks the same way? Think about the time away from the office that would be needed to learn how to adapt to your new life. Now, would your organisation make allowances for this time? When you came back to work, would you know how to advocate for what you needed to be changed so that you could be supported to succeed? If you wanted to start at a new organisation, where would you begin the search? What cues would you look for in their recruitment advertising that would make you feel they were an employer who would consider a blind candidate? At the end of the day, despite changing the way you worked, you’re still a capable individual who has talents that can add value to an organisation. The added skills you bring in terms of resilience and adaptability surely outweigh the extra perceived hassle of accommodating your new needs? Shouldn’t you be a candidate of choice? This week Jenni Nelson talked to Amy Cato, founder of the Executive Women Shortlists on why diversity is such an important issue to her, the business and social benefit of targeting candidates with disability and the importance of creating inclusive recruitment marketing. If you're interested in learning how to attract and recruit people with disabilities, join Amy and stroke survivor and diversity advocate Emma Gee at their workshop Sydney on the 23rd of June.
