I used to be a mess. Fifty pounds overweight, dating a woman two decades older than me (yes you read that right), wracked with grief over my mother’s sudden death, traumatized from my upbringing and violent bullying in childhood, ashamed of my appearance, plus guilt-ridden for my failings—including being let go from two jobs. Meanwhile, I had big dreams of being a musician and seeing the world, while I spent most of my time scrolling through Facebook. I blamed everyone but me: “My social commitments are why I can’t lose weight… I can’t break up with my girlfriend because she’ll be sad… Those companies didn’t appreciate me anyway… I’m not successful in the music scene because they don’t ‘get me’…” And so on. Then one day I realized: “I can’t get there from here.” I realized that I was the one standing in my own way. My own beliefs about myself and the decisions I made as a result were the greatest impediment to my success. Other men helped me see that. After that experience, transforming myself and my life became a daily practice. I exercised, lost weight, and joined a men’s group. I meditated every morning, studied great works of spirituality, and healed my heart in therapy. All of this was done solely in the company of men. In less than two years, I had turned my life around completely. Within 23 months, I had ended my unfulfilling relationship, and began the process of selling everything I owned to fulfill my lifelong dream of travel around the world. Those years of travel were my own personal Hero’s Journey, my greatest dream, which I completed with honor and wild success. My happiness today is a living testimony to the power of men to transform other men, and of our ability to radically transform ourselves with consistent effort.
