At the recent Labour conference, shadow chancellor John McDonnell announced that the party would be conducting a series of “war games,” role-playing different scenarios in the event Labour came to power, including what happens if there’s a run on the pound.
The man running those war games will be Richard Barbrook, senior lecturer at the University of Westminster, who also helped write Labour’s [link url="http://www.wired.co.uk/article/jeremy-corbyn-digital-democracy-manifesto"]digital democracy manifesto[/link] in 2016. He often gets called “Jeremy Corbyn’s digital guru.” But, really, he says, "I'm just an old punk."
Barbrook's games have been influential before. During the 2017 election campaign, he helped create [link url="https://corbynrun.com/"]“Corbyn Run"[/link], a mobile platform game where players shake down bankers and avoid Tory ministers.
He discusses his games, his long friendship with John McDonnell, and his books about technology, including [link url="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Californian_Ideology"]The Californian Ideology[/link], “a pioneering critique of the neo-liberal politics of WIRED magazine." |
