Do you sometimes struggle to connect the dots between making business and life meaningful?
Or do you lead people who lack passion, ‘oomph’ and motivation?
Today I’m talking to Phill Nosworthy who offers 6 keys to unlocking meaning and motivation in your workplace. Plus oh so much more… Phill is a dynamite guest who is founder of Switch Inc and is an executive coach, global speaker and specialist in the area of making business and life meaningful. Phill has delivered over 1500 presentations to audiences in over 40 cities around the world.
One of my favourite parts of the interview was speaking about The Meaning Makers which Phill shares “is this big, beautiful piece of work that draws on classical literature, mythology, faith texts and cutting-edge science about what makes life meaningful. We work to answer the question, ‘How do you get to the end of the day, the week, the month, the year, or even a little more grandiose, how do you get to the end of your life and say, ‘that was extraordinary?’’. That’s the Meaning Makers and my hope is that this will be something that we get to talk to people about for many years to come.”
6 Principles for meaningful work Tune into the Podcast to hear Phill unpack these 6 principles answering the question of what makes business and life meaningful:
- Mastery
- Autonomy
- Purpose
- Community
- Challenge
- Contribution
Managers – the problem or solution? Phill offers his thoughts around the challenges and opportunity for workplaces: “People ask me what’s the biggest opportunity in business and the answer is managers. People ask what’s the biggest challenge in any organization. I say managers. Because the truth is it’s the quality of managers that define your organization.”
Forget the force-fed approach, it’s about relationship “Where health and safety and culture so regularly falls down is that it’s a top-down force fed approach that doesn’t take into account who people are or what they aspire to or how they want to be rewarded”
Learn your teams value currencies “Working out together, as a team, what success looks like and then really taking the time to understand the drivers and what I call value currencies of your teams, that’s the thing that’s going to hugely accelerate an organization’s impact and the quality of work that they do.”
Investing rather than filling time
Phill shares that when you know WHO you are and WHAT you’re here to do then you can cut off the junk that doesn’t matter “I work to a mantra that there is enough time. People are just running around filling time rather than using time well. If you can disconnect from stuff that is not important, you’ll find that you have enough time to get the things done that are yours to do.”
These key highlights are just the tip of the iceburg. Phill is an extraordinary communicator and offers so many gold nuggets to support you to take yourself and your workplace from good to great. Dive in and enjoy.
