March 3, 1993. Rancho Viejo, Texas. When 18 year old Joey Fischer Jr. broke up with his girlfriend Cristina, her mother, Dora Garcia Cisneros, could not accept it. The young man came from a good family, was a good student, and Cisneros imagined her daughter marrying him. When Joey refused to reconcile with Cristina, rejecting Dora’s $500 bribe and relentless phone calls, Dora took matters into her own hands, and consulted a Curandero, a folk healer and fortune teller whom she pleaded with to cast a love spell on the boy to fix the relationship. When the Curandero said it wasn’t possible, Cisneros came up with a more deadly solution.
